DR. PEETS TALBOT GRADUATES FROM OBESITY MEDICINE ADVANCED CURRICULUM FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM

Ayesha Peets Talbot MD FAAP DABIM DABOM, recently graduated from the American Society of Bariatric Physicians® (ASBP®) Advanced Curriculum Fellowship Program. Dr. Peets Talbot was recognized for her commencement of the Advance Curriculum Fellowship Program at the ASBP’s Overcoming Obesity 2015 in Washington, DC – September 30-October 4, 2015.

The ASBP Advanced Curriculum Fellowship Program prepares health care providers to better treat patients affected by obesity and its associated conditions through completion of 500 hours of obesity treatment-specific continuing medical education during a three-year period. These education sessions include, among other topics, diet and nutrition; behavior modification techniques; exercise prescription; pharmacotherapy; and pathophysiology of glucose intolerance, metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that nearly 36 percent of U.S. adults and 17 percent of youth are affected by obesity. Obesity increases the risk of having heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and certain cancers, the leading causes of preventable death in the United States.

“In Bermuda, the prevalence of adult overweight/obesity is 67 percent.” said Dr. Peets Talbot. “I am interested in being part of the solution to this medical epidemic by locally helping patients affected by obesity who seek access to safe evidence-based medical treatment options.”

In June of 2013, the American Medical Association (AMA) declared obesity a chronic disease state, leading more patients to seek clinical obesity treatment options from their primary care providers. Physician supervision is necessary to detect and treat weight-related medical conditions, and physicians can provide a variety of options specialized to the patient’s individual weight-loss needs.

Patients and their health care providers need a variety of options for obesity treatments, since no single treatment approach will work for every individual. The Obesity Algorithm®, presented by ASBP, outlines four medical weight-loss methods: dietary modification, exercise prescription, behavior modification and medication.
